The 32-year-old accused was intercepted in Yambuk at 6.20pm Wednesday and blew .319 - more than six times the legal limit.

Port Fairy police Sergeant Dave Walkley said the motorist was returning home to Laang after purchasing a silver BMW sedan in Yambuk just minutes earlier.

He said members observed the vehicle driving erratically east on the Princes Highway and the motorist was intercepted for a breath test.

"The driver recorded a positive result to alcohol on the preliminary breath test and was conveyed to Port Fairy police station where he recorded an evidentiary breath test result of 0.319," Sergeant Walkley said.

"This is the highest breath alcohol reading that I have ever seen and I cannot believe that the driver could even physically drive given his level of intoxication."

Sergeant Walkley said the incident was "an absolute recipe for disaster".

"(It is) extremely lucky that police intercepted him after driving such a short distance, his intention was to drive another 60 kilometres home," he said.

"I have no doubt he would have finished up crashing and killing himself and, or someone else. This is certainly the definition of a bloody idiot and he has now been removed from our roads."

The man's licence was immediately suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1325.

The driver will be summons to court where could lose his licence for more than five years due to a previous conviction for drink-driving.
