Detective Senior Constable Nick Roberts, of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit, said that a 34-year-old Terang man had been charged with theft of a wallet from a car in Hamilton allegedly committed on Tuesday last week.
The wallet contained bank cards which the man is alleged to have used on Friday and Saturday to obtain goods valued at a couple of hundred dollars.
He also attempted online purchases but those transactions were not successful.
The man was arrested by Hamilton detectives on Saturday evening in Kenny Street after being identified through security camera footage.
He was interviewed, charged with thefts and deceptions and remanded in custody to appear in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Monday for a bail/remand hearing.
The man was already on a court-imposed community corrections order and police will oppose him being granted bail as an unacceptable risk of committing further offences.
His girlfriend, a 37-year-old Hamilton woman, has also been charged with deception offences relating to the use of the bank card and was released on bail to appear in a court at a later date.
A 28-year-old Wyndham Vale man and a 19-year-old Mooroopna woman have also been charged with three thefts from Hamilton shops between last Wednesday and Friday.
The man was remanded in custody to appear in Warrnambool court on Monday as he was also wanted on warrants of apprehension.
The woman was charged and released on bail to appear in a court at a later date.
