Luke Dodge, 23, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on September 10 via video-link from prison. He pleaded guilty to assault offences.

On Friday, he was jailed for six months with 87 days already served in custody on remand.

The court heard the man was assessed for a community correction order but was found unsuitable.

Portland lawyer Vanessa Focken urged the court to still consider an order, stating that it would be of no benefit to Dodge or the community if he was released from custody without any supports, including assessment and treatment for drugs and mental health.

Magistrate Peter Mellas said it was an unfortunate circumstance.

He said there was a risk Dodge would be released back into the community and would hurt someone else while continuing to grapple with substance abuse.

He said Dodge had a criminal history involving making threats to kill and inflicting injuries on others.

"I had hopes that you would be found suitable for a community correction order to aid in issues that won't be addressed by simply just jailing you," Mr Mellas said.

"But unfortunately you have been found unsuitable. I'm left in a situation where the only possible sentence is one of imprisonment."

Dodge has another four months to serve in custody.

The court heard he was arrested on June 21 after he twice stabbed another man with a pair of scissors at a residential address in Portland.

Dodge had been excessively drinking, an argument ensued and he stabbed the victim in the mid-upper back and to the left side of his chest.

The victim suffered penetrative wounds.

Dodge was arrested and during an interview he said he wanted to incapacitate the victim.

The man and the victim were known to each other.
