Residents near the Timboon-Nullawarre Road have called on the state government to provide a permanent solution to fix the road, saying their vehicles have had cracked rims and it's an accident waiting to happen.

The Standard understands patching work for the road was done on Tuesday but South West Coast MP Roma Britnell said she was deeply concerned a road could be left to deteriorate.

"I've seen roads built by the Romans 2000 years ago that are in better condition than many of our south-west roads," she said.

"This is something you'd expect to see in a photo of the surface of the moon - not a road in south west Victoria. It's dangerous and needs to be made safe as soon as possible."

Ms Britnell said in 2017 the Victorian Auditor General found the Department of Transport had no plan for proactive maintenance, was reactive and waited until "something like this happens before they make an attempt to fix it".

"It's dangerous for everyone who uses it - and for the freight industry, the road is their workplace," she said.

Corangamite Shire coastal ward councillor Jamie Vogels said the council had been strongly advocating to the state government to get the road fixed and many others in the shire. He said he didn't think the area of road had seen any decent works in a number of years.

"People are over it, on lots of roads around here," he said.

"People need to go onto the Regional Roads Victoria website, click on Barwon South West on the map, click on the purple icon and leave a message."

Department of Transport acting regional director for Barwon South West Michael Bailey said the department was aware of issues with the condition of the road which had been ongoing since a landslip caused significant damage to the road surface.

"While our crews continue to investigate long-term upgrades, we'll continue to carry out patching works as needed," he said.
