The 39-year-old threw 61.82 with her first throw in a hotly-contested final at Tokyo. Sixth-place equals her finish at Rio 2016, and betters her ninth at London 2012.
She was part of a historic moment for Australian athletics with Mitchell, bronze medallist Kelsey-Lee Barber and Mackenzie Little all finishing in the top eight, which was a first - both men's or women's - in a field event final at an Olympics.

Barber's final throw of 64.56m was just five centimetres adrift of silver medallist Marie Andrejcyzk from Poland. China's Liu Shiying, who threw a season-best 66.34 with her first throw, claimed the gold medal.
Mitchell failed to record a legal throw, deliberately walking over the line three times in the second round of the final. Her other throws were 61.66 and 60.08.
