ON Thursday afternoon Warrnambool couple Blair and Anthony Burns were busy getting ready for their wedding.
Their big day was to be on Saturday but by mid-afternoon Mrs Burns had received messages from concerned friends telling her to check the news.
They did, and by late afternoon Premier Daniel Andrews had announced a five-day lockdown for Victoria would start at midnight on Thursday.
The couple looked at each other and decided their wedding would go ahead Thursday night.
"The first thing I did was call the celebrant and I asked 'is there any chance we could get married tonight?'," Mrs Burns said.
"She just said 'what time'?"
Mr Burns said luckily their venue at the Warrnambool Racecourse was already set up with furniture and decorations in place.
He said the florist was able to make a bouquet and an archway of flowers in record timing.
Mrs Burns had her best friend do her hair and she did her own make up.
About 60 guests were able to attend and the couple were standing side by side at the altar by 8.30pm.
"We did it in three and a half hours," Mr Burns said.
"People were absolutely gobsmacked," Mrs Burns said.
"We had the most amazing time.
"There was so much energy in the room.
"Everyone loved it, we couldn't believe we pulled it off in a couple of hours."
Mrs Burns said the support had been overwhelming.
"We even had a lady who was helping us set up in the day get a call to say the wedding is going ahead, she was at the supermarket and left her trolley to come and light candles for the wedding," she said.
The wedding was extra sweet for Mr and Mrs Burns who had planned a surprise wedding on their joint 30th birthdays in August last year but had to cancel due to the coronavirus lockdowns.
Friends have given the couple a few days away at Halls Gap for a honeymoon and they'll wait and see when they can go.
"We've been waiting and waiting to get married," Mrs Burns said.
"We're still on such a high."
