THEY'RE a throwback to times gone by and used to come with a pack of chewing gum.
This winter, footy cards have proven a popular pastime for little and some not so little kids with most newsagents around the region selling out.
Although most children collect to then trade with their friends and fill up their footy cards folders, some cards can fetch up to $1000 online.
Camperdown Newsagent owner and manager Nola McCann said her store had sold out of footy cards and said they had been more popular than ever.
"It has been better this year than the last couple of years," she said.
"Last year was a little bit different with everything.
"Six years ago I think we probably sold out.
"But they've been great this year."
Ms McCann said the footy cards had been popular with both boys and girls.
"It's a great reward system," she said.
"It's also a good way for kids to learn to save.
"It brings back some of the old basics, if you do a few jobs at home you get a bit of pocket money."

Ramandeep Singh, from Warrnambool's Nextra newsagents, said footy cards had sold out at local newsagents and petrol stations.
He said some people had purchased full boxes of footy cards.
Jacinta Bourke, from newsXpress at Gateway Plaza, said footy cards had been extremely popular.
"We sold out and ordered another lot and sold out within three days," she said.
"They're always popular but we've never sold out this early in the year before.
"It's mainly boys that have been buying them, probably about 90 per cent."
In Koroit footy cards hadn't been as popular with owner Robyn Polkinghorn returning four boxes to the supplier due to a lack of demand.
But by 11.30am on Tuesday her remaining footy cards had sold out.
"I think people just haven't been buying them in Koroit but they might be wanting them now," she said.
She said in previous years Select AFL footy cards had been popular but this year they hadn't received as many as other years.
Footy cards had also sold out at the Timor Street newsagency in Warrnambool, the Port Fairy Newsagency and the Terang Newsagency.
Footy cards are also unavailable via the AFL store online.
