The Junior Warrnibald is a spin-off of the popular Warrnibald event, a portrait prize for local artists.
Presented by WAG and WDEA Works, the Junior Warrnibald invites artists aged under 18 year to create a portrait of someone known to them and exhibit the work in the Gallery.
WAG director Vanessa Gerrans said interested entrants can pick up a frame from the gallery and create their portrait in the Junior Warrnibald exhibition space from Saturday, or take a frame home and bring the completed portrait back to be exhibited between Saturday 3 - Friday 16 July.
"We're here at the opening of the Junior Warrnibald," she said on Saturday.
"You can come in, do a portrait or grab a frame and be in the running for great prizes."
Artists can submit a portrait of anyone in their lives who they look up to.
The subject must know and have a relationship with the artist, for example the artist's subject could be a parent, a grandparent, a foster carer, a neighbour, a friend, a teacher, a doctor, a nurse, or a shop owner.
Prize winners are announced at WAG from 1-2 pm Saturday 18 July with the prize winning works included in the Warrnibald Prize 2021 exhibition which opens Friday 23 July.
Saturday also marked the official opening of of Wallabies Gambit Club by Matthew Clarke.
The exhibition encourages visitors to learn through play about themes of strategy, patience, movement and mathematics in the Families Learning Centre.
The exhibition has been popular these school holidays with families visiting to view the artworks, play chess and engage in the space with creative activities.
