Postie Bike Pilgrimage heading to Warrnambool to raise funds for cancer

A group of 12 riders have already signed up to make the two-day fundraising journey from Bannockburn to Warrnambool and have raised over $2000 of their $15000 goal.

Three more riders have purchased old postie bikes and are expected to sign up, setting the event up to be the biggest pilgrimage yet.

In 2018 - its first year - the group raised more than $12,500 after riding from Mount Wallace, Victoria to Balranald in New South Wales.

Founder Callum Leemon said the initiative was conceived after he learned of his father's bowel cancer diagnosis, while co-founder Dean Beattie's mother-in-law survived breast cancer.

"Cancer can affect anyone and everyone's known someone that's had it so that was the charity we chose," Mr Leemon said.

"The group originally started as part of the mystery box rally (car rallies) and we began raising money for the cancer council that way.

"We went in 2013 and 2015, but that got a little bit expensive because you had to supply your own car, so then we thought we may as well do our own thing and found some postie bikes cheap."

The group will be staying within Victoria after last year's trip to Bathurst, New South Wales was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The group will be accompanied by a support crew, van, motorbike trailers and extra fuel and is expected to make the journey in early October.
