But Dennington also took away positives.
The Dees set up the win in the second quarter to run out 11.8 (74) to 7.6 (48) winners in the Warrnambool and District league clash at Dennington on Saturday.
Dogs coach Ben Thornton said it was "definitely our best game" of the year.
"I was real happy," he said.
"Everything we spoke about before the game the boys did - pressure-wise and the way we moved the ball.
"Probably the second quarter we didn't do it and that sort of put us behind and we had to play catch up a bit then."
He said that pressure involved doing all the one percenters, including tackles, smoothers and shepherds.

Thornton is confident the new-look team is headed in the right direction. He's excited by where it could be at in a year's time.
He will be asking for more of the same when the Dogs face South Rovers in round 12.
"We just want to be really tough around the footy and not let them get easy handballs out of the contest," he said.
The coach had praise for recruit Bronte Baker who was named the Dogs' best player.
"He's a machine, he puts in off the track as well," he said.
"It's a credit to him and he's had a great year for us."
Meanwhile, Jak Simms impressed on debut, flying for marks and crashing packs.
