Young pirates, explorers, rock climbers and their doting parents are in for excitement later this year as Moyne Shire Council prepares to improve its playgrounds.

A contemporary playground at Hawkesdale, a shipwreck-themed playground at Peterborough's foreshore and a range of natural and formal play equipment at Port Fairy's Martins Point will take shape after sharing funding for upgrades worth $278,000.
The playgrounds will feature soft-fall surfaces, improved access ramps and paths for children of all abilities, while swings, slides, monkey bars, a carousel and rock climbing will be found across the three sites.
Moyne mayor Daniel Meade said the upgrades followed community feedback from families and even from the kids who played at the grounds.
"Our playgrounds play a key role in helping to promote a more vibrant, inclusive and active lifestyle in our community," Cr Meade said.
Work is under way at Peterborough foreshore with a plan for it to reopen by mid-July while work at the Hawkesdale and Port Fairy playgrounds will begin after the school holidays.
The council is also preparing to install space for social gatherings at Railway Place in Port Fairy, including new play equipment alongside tables and seating.
"The area will also feature artistic components highlighting the link to the Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail, and will include a bike repair station and bike racks," Cr Meade said.
"The project is expected to be completed by Christmas."
Meanwhile, the council has finished work on a new recreational space at Irvine Reserve in Peterborough, which includes a nature play space.
The site includes new vegetation, walking trails, seating and boardwalks and the removal of an unsealed road has allowed a playing field to extend for sporting groups.
"It's great to see the project completed after a significant amount of consultation, planning and hard work to revitalise the Reserve and meet the diverse needs of the community and visitors," Cr Meade said.
The federal government fully funded the works, which cost $440,000.
