Warrnambool's major art prize makes a comeback to gallery

The non-acquisitive, open-entry prize - run jointly between the Warrnambool Art Gallery and WDEA Works Warrnambool - aims to foster community spirit and celebrate people who have contributed to a culturally rich and diverse community.

WDEA Works CEO Tom Scarborough said the Warrnibald helped keep people connected.

"Following a tumultuous year of uncertainty and delivering the prize online, it's now more important than ever for us to maintain that community spirit and connection which the Warrnibald celebrates," he said.

Artists choose subjects who are currently, or have previously, made significant contributions to local culture, art, volunteering, business, sport, politics, education or health in our region or have represented our region by contributing in these areas in Australia or overseas.

WAG director Vanessa Gerrans said she was looking forward to seeing these significant subjects adorn the walls at gallery.

"We're thrilled to be able to welcome the prize back to WAG in its physical format, alongside opening the doors to community to visit this much-loved event," Ms Gerrans said.

"However, the precariousness of the pandemic means we will still be implementing restrictions such as social distancing based on the current advice."

Warrnambool mayor Vicki Jellie said she was looking forward to the Warrnibald exhibition.

"It's a much-loved event that showcases the depth and diversity of talent among our local artists," Cr Jellie said.

Money raised through the 2021 Warrnibald and Junior Warrnibald will help to support WDEA Works Social Enterprises' Artlink Program, and is an initiative that assists people with a range of abilities identify and achieve their creative goals and promote the inclusivity of everyone in community life.

Entries for the Warrnibald are open until July 17, and the Junior Warrnibald July 18.
