Greater Western Victoria Rebels have thrown the South Warrnambool teenager into an unfamiliar position as a small defender in 2021.
Challenge accepted.
Stevens, who turns 18 later this month, is averaging 17 disposals a game for the NAB League club.
"It is a new role that I have never done, even in juniors," he said.
"I am still learning it but I'm enjoying the challenge."
Stevens, who plays on a wing or in the forward line when he returns to the Hampden league and can also play midfield, believes the Rebels' coaching staff thought he could play as an attacking defender.
"Some of my strengths such as ball use and decision-making can be really good to help set up play going forward," he said.
But ensuring his opponent doesn't hit the scoreboard means his role is multi-faceted.
"You see the game from a different angle and it's a different mindset, you're more focused on your man," Stevens said.
The Emmanuel College student, who is eligible for this year's AFL draft, said adding to his football skillset would hold him in good stead long term.
"Having confidence wherever you go, knowing I've done this before (helps)," he said.
"I know I can play down back or if you do get an opportunity to play in preferred positions you've know that you've done them for a while."

Victoria's recent coronavirus lockdown has impacted the NAB League's schedule as the competition includes Melbourne-based clubs which are under tighter restrictions.
But league officials worked hard last weekend to put on a game for the Rebels against Geelong Falcons - another regional-based team.
The Rebels, coming off their first loss of the season, hope to play Gippsland Power this weekend.
"The opportunity to just play a game is unreal. I am very thankful the people above us have let us play," Stevens said.
"Even if it is interrupted, just be thankful for what you get."
