The Dogs were smashed by Panmure last week so will be looking to turn around their fortunes against Timboon Demons at Timboon on Saturday in round two.
Both are young teams and the Dees suffered a 56-point loss to Russells Creek in their season opener.
"We'll probably go back to basics a bit, we tried to do a few too many things that weren't wet weather footy," Thornton said of the Dogs' round one loss.
"We tried to play dry weather footy too many times, so I think it's just adjust to the conditions and go back to basics.
"We got first-use of it off Reggie Barling in the middle."

Thornton was full of praise for recruit Barling (South Warrnambool) in the ruckman's first hit-out for the club.
"He came up against a great ruckman in (Daniel Roache) Roachy, like he's a Hampden league ruckman, and I think Reggie battled real well through the middle it was just the execution out the middle that let us down to go forward," he said.
The first-year Dogs mentor also felt his group offered glimpses of their potential against the Bulldogs.
"Panmure - they're going to be a good side - credit to them," Thornton said.
"The way they move the ball is very good. A few times it didn't look like it was wet weather footy the way they moved it.
"Whereas we on the other hand were pretty sloppy in some points.
"But on a positive, we had four or five plays that were the way we want to play footy, we just couldn't execute it all day.
"If we can really gel and get together that'll be great for us."
