Moyne Shire mayor Daniel Meade said the improvements would ensure a safe and accessible passage to the popular Griffiths Island Lighthouse.
"The Griffiths Island Lighthouse in Port Fairy is one of the most popular tourism icons in the south-west region," Cr Meade said.
"This project will not only improve safety and emergency vehicle access to the island but will also complement the natural attractions on the island and enhance visitor experience, encouraging an increase in tourism visitation and regional economic benefits."
Moyne Shire Council received $73,000 from the Victorian government's Coastal Public Access and Risk Grants program with the council funding the balance required.
The project includes the replacement of deteriorated infrastructure under the causeway.
The state government funding is for the replacement of box culverts and concrete paths to allow emergency vehicle access and prevent tripping hazards.
"The Griffiths Island causeway has been impacted by its coastal location and has significantly deteriorated over the years," Cr Meade said.
"As part of the project, council will replace the culverts under the Griffiths Island causeway and construct a new footpath to improve accessibility and longevity of the track."
The lighthouse is currently not open to the public and only opens for events and showcases. The Port Fairy Information Centre said it received plenty of enquiries from tourists asking about the iconic attraction.
Council has advised the southern access to Griffiths Island will be temporarily closed during the period of construction.
Works on the first stage of the project are expected to be completed by the end of May, weather permitting.
Access to the island and the lighthouse will be via the northern causeway.
