Fanciful Toff, ridden by Jamie Kah, scored an impressive victory in a $135,000 benchmark 84 at Bendigo on Saturday and will be earmarked as a possible Warrnambool Cup starter for Maher and David Eustace.
The Bendigo meeting carried metropolitan status as it was the major meeting in Victoria on Saturday.
Maher said the Warrnambool Cup looked an ideal race for the six-year-old.
"I've got to give credit to our staff for producing Fanciful Toff in top condition," he told The Standard.
"Fanciful Toff has had a few niggling problems during his career but he's in top shape now. He seemed to settle really well in the run.

"We'll look at running Fanciful Toff in the Gold Heath at Caulfield on April 17 as the ideal lead in race to the Warrnambool Cup.
"It's a race I would love to win. We've had a lot of luck in the jumps races at the carnival but it would be great if we could win the cup."
Fanciful Toff has won seven of his 28 starts. Saunter Boy ran third behind his stablemate Fanciful Toff on Saturday and will head to Warrnambool to continue his jumping career.
"Saunter Boy showed plenty of ability over the jumps in his last campaign," Maher said. "He won one and ran second at his only two starts over the jumps.
"He's improved with those efforts under his belt from last year. He's ready for a good jumps campaign this season."
Grandslam, who won at Moonee Valley earlier this month, was unplaced in the $600,000 Rosehill Guineas at Rosehill on Saturday.
