Brett O'Neill, 41, of Camperdown, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he made an unsuccessful, self-represented bail application.

He told the court he was subject to a "police witch hunt", that his home had been raided five times in just over a month and he was not guilty.

The court heard he was arrested late Sunday after allegedly hitting a male victim to the right side of his face.

He allegedly pointed a 60 centimetre-long pole at the victim while making threats to seriously harm him.

Police attended the property and located a homemade pistol, a knife, meat cleaver, unsecured firearm ammunition and a small amount of what is believed to be cannabis.

Mr O'Neill is a prohibited person under the Firearms Act and is currently undergoing a community corrections order.

He was interviewed and charged with drug and weapon offences.

Mr O'Neill told the court he did not live at the property where the items were seized.

But magistrate Peter Mellas said the accused man had an extensive criminal history involving violence and firearm offences.

He said there was not enough evidence before the court to show the man was an acceptable risk in the community and refused bail.

Mr O'Neill, who appeared via video link from a remote facility, started yelling profanities at the magistrate.

He was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on May 3.
