GAC auctioneer Brian O’Halloran said yesterday the oil-on-canvas, painted by Belgian artist A. J. Jansen in 1912 and considered a valuable centenary marker, was estimated to sell for a small fortune.
“I valued it at $3000 to $5000,” he told
“It may not make that much or to the right person it could make a lot more. If the interest is right, if someone’s looking to collect a piece for the Titanic 100th anniversary I think it will sell but it’s very difficult to judge what it will go for.”
Mr O’Halloran said people guessed that Jansen may have painted the canvas from an image in his mind after the tragic sinking because he included a US flag.
“It’s side-on, cutting through the sea, not at the wharf, which is typical of all his paintings at that time,” he said.
“It’s extremely rare. He was a well-known maritime artist of the time.”
A Portland resident bought the painting at a Mildura auction 50 years ago for 10 pounds and submitted it to the GAC a few weeks ago, knowing the centenary would increase its selling point.
It is among 1482 antique lots up for grabs. Phone 5523 5333 for further details.
