And on the opening night of the inaugural Fifty for 50 event the 22-year-old broke his duck in fine style.
His Friday evening began with the quickest qualifying time and under the Fifty for 50's rules he started fourth for his heat, which he would go on to win.
The heat victory ensured he took part in the Dash, which he also won from the first row to secure pole position in the 30-lap feature.
From the green flag the Gold Coast resident streamed away from more experienced races in Matt Egel, Darren Mollenoyux and James McFadden and never looked back to claim the win.
"I'm really pleased to get a win at Premier. It's my first win here and to do it in such stiff competition was really good," McHugh said after the race.
"From the get go we set quick time and that's a good way to start your night and we manged to move forward from fourth to win that heat and then win the dash so kinda clean swept the night. I'm really happy."
Egel would finish second after starting on the fourth row while Mollenoyux would also finish on the podium. McFadden and Jye O'Keefe rounded out the top five.
McHugh, who is studying actuarial science at university in Queensland, was pleased to put in such a strong showing against some popular names Warrnambool like McFadden, Veal and Molloneyux.
"At their home track is a place they always go quite well. I've beaten them at home before but never in their backyards," he said.
"I have been coming for years but I wouldn't know how many races I have done here but it would probably be around 10 to 15 I'd say.
"This (win) is probably a highlight so far in my career."
