Timboon Gold's Fiona Newey relishing opportunity in top division

The Timboon Gold lead has cemented her spot in the club's top side in the Western District Bowls Division weekend pennant and is relishing the opportunity.

"I played a couple of games years ago but this year is my first consistent year with division one," she said.

"I really love bowls as I come from a bowling family. My parents were avid bowlers and I just like the challenge of getting close to that kitty.

"(Leading) is where I play my best bowls at this stage.

"(I like) just trying to set the team up. I do enjoy the role and I try not to let the pressure get to me and realise the importance of getting a good start for the team."

The 56-year-old has been in fine form recently, taking out the club's singles championship and also playing consistently in the top division in mid-week pennant.

The Timboon local, who grew up in the south-west town, defeated her weekend pennant skip Gillian Vorwerk in the final.

The Lochard Energy employee and disability support worker credits her role as a lead in pennant bowls as a catalysis in her first club championship victory.

"It's just draw, draw, draw and I think that is all I know but I want to extend my abilities to play weight when I need it in pairs and other competitions when you need to do something different," she said.

"I was shocked (when I won it). I still can't believe it really. Gill was such a great mentor and so nice to be playing against her as she is so gracious.

"She helps me keep focused. I'm always evaluating each bowl I have and that is something she says to think about."

Playing bowls is a family tradition for Newey with her late father Ray and mother Dot Footman eager players. Their influence still encourages her.

"Whenever I get on the mat I think of all the things they have said to me in the early days," she said.

"There is the basics you have been told like looking what your feet are doing, is it a long or a short end, think about your grass, 'give the man the money' and follow through with your arm.

"All those basics you try and do each bowl just to get it where it has to be."

Timboon Gold ended up losing to Warrnambool Gold on Saturday by 27 shots.

Elsewhere, Terang Green claimed its second win of the season by defeating Warrnambool Blue 60-53.

Koroit Blue kept in touch with the top of the table with an away win over Dennington.

Fourth-placed City Gold defeated Mortlake Blue while top-of-the-table City Red edged out Port Fairy Red.
