"A friend of mine, who has been our president here kept saying come down and have a bowl," he said.
"I kept saying I'm not playing 'old man marbles, I'm sorry'.
"Strangely enough I wish I had started playing when I was 30.
"It's an addictive sport."

Warrnambool Blue scored its second victory of division one pennant with an emphatic 78-48 shot win over Terang Gold at Warrnambool Bowls Club on Tuesday.
Holder has been bowling for about fours years and plays as a third for Blue.
He has been part of two midweek Western District Bowls Division premierships with Warrnambool. One in division three and one in division two.
The former sceptic is now encouraging people to take up bowls.
"It's a really enjoyable sport even if you've got minor physical limitations, you can come down and play socially on a Wednesday or Friday," he said.
"Even if you haven't got a partner you can put your name down as a single entry and you'll be more than welcome to the club.
"Socially it's been a real revelation for me because I've met another 200 elderly people my own age in the town and you get friendships and acquaintanceships, it's fantastic."
Holder is also grateful for the opportunities on offer at Warrnambool Bowls Club.
"We're very lucky in the town, our club has great facilities and the new dome at City Memorial - you could go there and people are welcoming," he said.
The Warrnambool resident of 35 years has played weekend pennant but he prefers midweek pennant because he feels it's more social.
He has tried to convince his children to play bowls as well but hasn't had any luck yet.
"Now they're a lot of younger people playing and they are usually the gun players," he said.
"There are still some good players 70 years plus who certainly show a lot of the younger ones how to play.
"But there is a younger group coming through."
Entries are now open for WBC's $12,000 Ladies Prestige Pairs tournament which starts January 20.
It's held over three days each year.
WBC is currently offering barefoot bowls for Christmas parties.
In other results, Warrnambool Gold defeated Mortlake Blue 78-37 and Port Fairy Gold won a 55-53 shot thriller against City Gold.
Meanwhile, Dennington Dolphins beat City Green 69-59 and Koroit Orange accounted for Timboon Maroon 57-48.
