But a stern word from close mate Paul O'Donnell - a Warrnambool Bowls Club stalwart - swayed him south to Timor Street.

Edwards featured in a nail-biting tie on Saturday as his Warrnambool Gold outfit couldn't be split from arch-rival City Gold.

"(Bowls started) through the corporate cup. You need three people and one experienced bowler and we'd come up and drink a few beers and have a fun time," he said.

"That's how it all started. I was nearly going to join here (at City Memorial) until the wife said 'what are you going to join there for?'.

"Paul is a good mate of mine and he said 'get down here you stupid idiot'. It's just a great game to be a part of."

Edwards, alongside City Gold mate Matt Fleming, said the match was hard-fought throughout.

"They could've won the game with the last bowl," Fleming said.

"They just ran into a short one."

Edwards and Fleming said their sides had both dropped games but were sitting favourably after five matches.

"We're going all right," Edwards said.

"We dropped a game to Terang and that's the only one we've lost. It could've gone either way. We didn't go up there thinking we had a certain win, but we got nothing.

"It's just so bloody even these days."

Fleming, meanwhile, said City Memorial's rivalry with Warrnambool was a point of interest.

"It's always one you psych yourself up for," he told The Standard.

"You know you're in for a good game. It's always tight and it really could be anyone's game."
