"It's been very strange," Ian said.
"Like most people in harness racing we're a family all involved in it.
"It's pretty tough when nobody is able to go and watch and get the enjoyment from the horses.
"That's widespread, it doesn't just relate to me, it relates to everybody.
"In saying that, Harness Racing Victoria has done a fantastic job in keeping racing going during COVID."

The Woolsthorpe farmer had reason to celebrate on Monday night at Terang Harness Racing Club.
Filly Surfsup Tigerpie claimed her first victory from 10 starts.
She won the Terang three-year-old pace over 2180 metres in a mile rate of 2:01:3 minutes.
Ian, trainer and driver, was relieved to post the win.
"It was good to finally get a win with her," he said.
"She's been consistent, just hasn't had a lot of luck in her races.
It was good to finally get a win with her.

"Last night everything went to plan."
Ian co-owns the horse with his daughter Aleisha Hausler and granddaughter Jordan Lange.
Ian doesn't expect Surfsup Tigerpie to reach the same heights as her group one-winning mother, Blucolla Tigerpie.
"She'll just keep poking along pretty well in the same class of horses that raced Monday night," he said.
"I have no ambitious plans for her, just keep racing and hope she improves along the way."
Ian explained Surfsup Tigerpie is Blucolla Tigerpie's first foal.
The mare also has a two-year-old and is set to foal again in the next fortnight.
Ian said he had three horses in work at the moment as well as six brood mares.
Stephen Lambert was also among the south-west winners at Terang on Monday night.
Bakers Bandit, driven by Jason Lee, took out its second race ever in the 1680m Maiden Pace.
