The Koroit Men's Shed committee was formed in December last year with 20 paid up members and another group of that number showing significant interest in joining.
Dennis Morgan was appointed president, Noel Button as secretary and Ian Coulson as treasurer, rounding out a strong executive ready to make the most of a bright start.
The committee even had a venue confirmed for the men's shed, with Moyne Health Services telling the group it could use a vacant shed at the old Koroit Hospital site.
Donations of equipment had also been made, giving the men's shed an important start in the bid to build its own infrastructure.
But the committee's momentum took a hit in March, along with the rest of the world, with the arrival of COVID-19.
The committee was able to continue to meet, but not in person as a group, stalling its progress.
But perhaps an even bigger hit come in September when Moyne Health Services declared its Koroit campus, home to the men's shed, off limits due to safety concerns.
These concerns centered on the main building and have yet to be resolved, with no clear date when they will.
Despite these setbacks, president Dennis Morgan said the quest for a men's shed in the town remained a realistic goal.
"This has put things back a bit, we were really advanced before everything hit," Mr Morgan said.
"We had started getting some funding and we had cleaned out the shed and began to look at how we would set it out with the equipment we had, it was pretty exciting.
"It has stopped us getting too much further ahead but we are still applying for funding."
Mr Morgan said while the old Koroit Hospital site remained the preferred location for the men's shed, the group is also actively looking at alternatives in the scenario the hospital stays off the table.
"We are on the lookout for other sites that may be suitable, there are options we have come across that are promising. Everything's a bit unknown at the moment but we are ready to hit the ground running."
This has put things back a bit, we were really advanced before everything hit.
