West Warrnambool coach Alastair Templeton and Nestles coach Alex Strauch told The Standard's new weekly cricket show, Cow Corner, Dennington and Brierly-Christ Church had conducted smart business in the off-season.
Templeton, whose club lured bowler Tyler Fowler from Woodford to join returning seamer Ben Rantall, said targeted recruiting was an effective tactic.
"I'm probably always looking at the clubs who are recruiting who they need, not just anyone who is on the market," Templeton told the show.
"It's about targeting your needs, not your wants, if that makes sense.
"I thought Dennington have recruited well. They've added to areas they would've said they can improve on and they haven't lost out on areas they were already good on."
Strauch said Brierly-Christ Church's new recruit, Sri Lankan national Gheedal Fernando, would likely fit in with ease.
He said it was smart business given former coach Jason Mungean retired at the end of this past season.
"As Al said, they're recruiting for a need, not just for the sake of recruiting," Strauch said.
