Mortlake secured a finals berth this past season but failed to advance to the grand final.
Grant, a selector, said the addition of recruit Dennis Delaney meant the club's depth would benefit as it chased another top-four spot.
We'll find a spot - it might be my spot - but he won't be getting gifted a spot. He'll have to prove himself in his rink.

"He's originally from down this way, but he's been playing in the Geelong area and has recently moved back to Cobden way so he's come back to us," Grant said.
"He'll come straight into division one and we'll otherwise have a similar team to this past year.
"He's played at a few different clubs and has played as a skipper a lot over the journey but he'll still need to prove himself as well.
"We'll find a spot - it might be my spot - but he won't be getting gifted a spot. He'll have to prove himself in his rink." Grant said finals was the par result for his side.
Mortlake will face off against powerhouse Warrnambool Gold in round one.
"We'll obviously be looking to be as competitive as we were last season. We did what we always aim to do and that's get into the top four," he said. "It was disappointing to go out last season in the preliminary final but that's the way it goes. I think our draw will be tougher again this season.
"It'll be tougher but nothing scares us here. We've learned over the years that they're all beatable.
"We've had a lot of narrow losses to the top sides over the years and it teaches you that you can beat them."
Saturday pennant begins on October 31 while Midweek pennant starts Tuesday week.
