A 35-year-old Warrnambool man has been remanded in custody charged with eight offences relating to an alleged stabbing.
Detective Senior Constable Joe Fisher, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said the man was arrested, interviewed and charged before being remanded in custody overnight on Monday.
Those charges are headed by intentionally causing injury, other assault-related offences, as well as possessing a controlled weapon and causing criminal damage.
He said the 42-year-old Warrnambool victim was still recovering in the Warrnambool Base Hospital after emergency surgery to help repair a lacerated liver on Friday night.
Detective Constable Fisher said two men arrived at Bates Road units in Warrnambool at about 8pm last Friday.
That led to a conversation before the 35-year-old man threw a brutal punch.
The victim has then gone to move away and been stabbed, suffered a puncture wound that damaged his liver. The investigator said that CCTV showed the incident.
"It's pretty clear in terms of a video and we would expect that it will be crucial evidence in any following proceeding," Detective Senior Constable Fisher said.
"The victim then retreated inside a unit, realises he's been stabbed and a witness who heard yelling rings triple zero (000)," he said.
On Monday two warrants were executed by police at an Ocean Grove address in Warrnambool and at a Raglan Parade motel.
The 35-year-old man was arrested and remanded in custody. He was expected to appear in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday but a police prosecutor said the man was "not behaving well" in the city's police station cells.
No application for bail was made and the man was remanded in custody until October 12.
The magistrate also revoked the man's bail which he was previously placed on in relation to charges of recklessly causing injury and criminal damage. The court heard the man was withdrawing from ice.
A second man arrested on Monday was released pending further inquiries.

At 9.30pm Monday: A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a brutal stabbing which left a victim with a lacerated liver.
The alleged offender from both a Warrnambool and Frankston address was remanded in custody on Monday night and will appear in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Warrnambool Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Richard Hughes said the incident occurred near the city's Turn-In Motel outside a unit.
"The accused has punched the victim to the head and as the victim went to walk away he's punched him in the back with a knife and pierced his liver," he said.
"The victim was then operated on and the accused was arrested today and remanded tonight.
"The victim was totally blindsided, in that one thrust the knife entered between the two ribs and lacerated his liver."
Detective Senior Constable Hughes said a second man present at the incident was arrested and interviewed but released without charge.
Earlier, 1pm: Two Warrnambool men aged in their late 20s have been arrested after a brutal knife assault which left a victim with a lacerated liver and requiring emergency surgery.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Raven, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said an incident happened at Bates Road housing units in Warrnambool about 8pm Friday night.
He said two men approached a man sitting outside a unit, there was a discussion and then one of the men brutally punched the victim to the head.
That action was caught on a security camera at the nearby motel.
"The victim was extremely fearful of what was going to happen next and as he's turned around, he's been stabbed with a knife, causing a laceration to his liver," he said.
"The victim did not realise initially that he had been stabbed, he just felt a burning sensation.
"When he noticed the blood loss, he's been transported to the Warrnambool Base Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to repair his liver."
Detective Sergeant Raven said the wound was life-threatening.
"He's been taken into surgery, undergone the operation and is now in a stable condition," he said.
On Monday morning police executed two search warrants, at Warrnambool's Ocean Grove and at a Raglan Parade motel.
The two men aged in their late 20s were arrested and are currently being interviewed by police investigators.
Detective Sergeant Raven said the initial assault was completely unprovoked.
"It was just a brutal punch, I don't know how he wasn't knocked out, followed by the stabbing. It is extremely serious," he said.
