Detective Senior Constable Wayne Ryan, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said a male and female were at their home in Warrnambool's Bryant Street when a man walked into their kitchen at 10.15pm.
"The back door was unlocked and the random male has walked into the unlit kitchen," he said.
"The male occupant of the house has challenged the person who then fled back out the back door.
"The victims were very surprised and scared."
Detective Senior Constable Ryan said the victims were unable to identify the male because it was dark.
He urged anyone with information to contact Warrnambool police or Crime Stoppers.
He said it was also a timely reminder to people to secure their homes.
"It's prudent to lock up, even when you're at home," the detective said.
