The 29-year-old, who cannot be named because that could identify the victim, appeared in Warrnambool Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with aggravated burglary, breaching a family violence intervention order and bail offences.
The man made an unsuccessful, self-represented bail application and was remanded in custody until December.
Detective Senior Constable Victoria Hudson, of the Portland police crime investigation unit, told the court the man was the respondent in an intervention order which protected his former partner from family violence.
She alleged the man breached that order on July 22 by sending offensive messages to the victim, threatening to kill her and damage her property.
He was arrested on July 28 and later released on bail with the condition he not attend the victim's house.
Then on Sunday, the man allegedly drove to the woman's house armed with a baseball bat about 9.30pm.
He approached a locked rear door and hit it with the bat until it broke.
He then gained access to the house and once inside walked into the kitchen where three people were present.
Detective Senior Constable Victoria Hudson said a female witness armed herself with a stool as the man's ex-partner ran from the house screaming.
She said the accused man then singled out the protected person's new partner and told him he was going to teach him a lesson.
He allegedly swung the baseball bat at the man, hitting him on the left forearm.
A scuffle took place as the male victim attempted to get the bat out of the accused's hand.
Detective Senior Constable Victoria Hudson said the victim then left the property but was approached from behind by the offender and allegedly hit in the back of the ribs and upper back with the baseball bat.
She said the assault caused "extreme pain, soft tissue injuries and bruising".
The accused fled the scene before police attended.
He was arrested on Monday in Portland's Daniel Street.
The court heard the man's criminal history involved similar offending dating back to 2014.
He will appear in court again on December 4.
