An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the HEMS 4 helicopter arrived at the scene and was winching him on a stretcher to safety.
He said the man, believed to be in his 50s, had come to rest in an awkward spot with some rocks blocking the vertical descent of the stretcher, making the rescue a delicate operation.
"He has suspected pelvic injuries but his obs are good and he's in a stable condition," the spokesman said.
Paramedics are assessing whether the man will be flown to South West Healthcare's Warrnambool Base Hospital or a Melbourne hospital.
