Louis Herbert - who started at Friendly Societies Park before managing a three-game AFL career - has returned for 2021.
The 26-year-old also featured for North Ballarat Roosters and Geelong Football League powerhouse South Barwon after his Gold Coast stint ended.
South Warrnambool president Steve Harris said Herbert's professionalism and class meant he was an ideal recruit.
"We're thrilled and excited to have Louis back," he said.
"We can see his experience and professionalism will add a lot to our existing playing group. "It's great to have someone of his calibre come back and play with us."
Harris said Herbert would help the Roosters reach the next stage of their development. "We've been competitive but clearly we need to step up to achieve that success we're all after," he said.
Herbert said he was relishing the chance to play alongside childhood friends.
"I grew up playing juniors with most of the boys still on the list so to be able to come back and play with my best mates is really exciting," he said.
"I believe I can bring my experience, leadership and versatility to the club.
"(I'll be) offering myself and my skills as much as possible to the playing group and coaching staff so that we can strive for that flag in 2021."
Mat Battistello will again coach the Roosters in 2021.
