A Colac police spokesman said it appeared the fire started in the lounge room of the Beeac home.
He said initial investigations led police to believe the cause of the fatal blaze was suspicious.
"Victoria police arson squad chemists examined the scene and we are waiting for a detailed report from those expert investigators," he said.
Wednesday, August 12: Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal house fire in Beeac, north of Colac, on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services attended an address in Winston Street following reports a house was on fire about 3.20am.
A man, who was pulled from the burning home, died at the scene.
A woman, who was also in the residence, was able to escape and raised the alarm.
Detectives from the Victoria Police arson squad have been notified and Colac crime investigation unit detectives are investigating.
