A spokeswoman said police officers couldn't believe their eyes.
The male driver was intercepted by officers and had a rather chipper attitude until he was told he would be fined.
The fine was issued under the Road Safety Act as the vehicle was over the allowed length.
The driver, a man in his 30s, was intercepted in Madeira Packet Road just before 4.30pm on Saturday.
The police spokeswoman said that drivers had to use their common sense and towing a large branch down a busy road was always going to get a motorist in trouble.
