The Standard posed this question online and 373 people completed the unscientific survey, stating they didn't believe Peter Schneider should have been terminated from the top job.
Some questioned why the decision was made when Mr Schneider passed performance appraisals and received a pay rise.
"To say they've left Warrnambool ratepayers disappointed is an understatement," wrote one respondent.
Others suggested an administrator should be brought in.
"Whether or not the CEO was doing a great job or a terrible one, sacking him without providing a chance to improve via performance appraisals and against the advice of the committee set up to manage his performance is outrageous," wrote another.
Some respondents said it was a difficult question to answer because the reasons behind the decision were not made public. "A very costly exercise, which I assume will be funded by ratepayers. We deserve an explanation," wrote one respondent.
The survey results also revealed 90 per cent of respondents were not confident the councillors could work together due to their differing views on the decision.
"We need the councillors to be more open and work together," wrote one person.
In addition to that, 92 per cent of respondents believe the cost of sacking Mr Schneider should be made public.
