Dylan Banks, 24, pleaded guilty in Warrnambool Magistrates Court to recklessly causing injury and weapon-related offences.
The charges related to an incident on April 13 when Banks attended a property in Camperdown's Campbell Street.
The 64-year-old male victim answered the door. Banks demanded money but was told to leave the property.
When Banks refused, the victim pushed him away from the door.
Banks then punched the victim to the nose, causing him to fall to the ground and his nose to bleed.
The victim rang police and Banks fled on foot.
He was located by officers a short distance from the property.
Banks was observed throwing a meat cleaver onto the ground. That led police to conduct a search of the man's bag and uncover three pocket knives.
He was arrested and conveyed to Camperdown police station for an interview.
A search warrant conducted at a motel room the man was staying at later uncovered a hand gun, firearm magazine, five .22 calibre bullets and other firearm parts.
The court heard Banks did not hold a firearm licence and was a prohibited person under the Fire Arms Act because he had previously been imprisoned and was also the respondent in a family violence intervention order.
Banks' lawyer said his client directed police to the firearms, which he considered "toys".
Banks was jailed for the 50 days he served in custody on remand and released on a 12-month corrections order.
That order will include treatment for his drug addiction and programs to reduce the risk of re-offending.
He was also fined $1000.
