Sergeant Mark Phillips, of Hamilton police, said they had received plenty of complaints over a number of weeks about the man's behavior all across town.
Sergeant Phillips said the 21- year-old had been "lairising" on the footpaths and streets across the town for quite a while on his peewee 50 motorbike.
He said many of the complaints were about the speed the man was travelling.
"The Hamilton van crew were out on foot for another matter and he rode right into their arms," Sergeant Phillips said.
"His $100 motorbike just cost him $1005."
The man, on his way from one house to another, had been riding along the footpath in the dark when he was intercepted by the police about 7.30pm.
Sergeant Phillips said there was a "bit of a wrestle" over the bike with the rider not wanting to give it over to police.
The man will face charges of unlicensed driving, riding on the footpath with no headlights, no helmet on an unregistered and unroadworthy vehicle.
Sergeant Phillips said it would cost $1005 to get the vehicle out of the impound lot.
