Justice Paul Coghlan says "it won't be easy" but there's no reason to assume criminal trials can't be back underway by August.

Trials haven't been running because of coronavirus, prompting an increase in people seeking release on bail.

Biannca Edmunds, who is accused of murder, applied for release on Tuesday.

She's accused of having her husband Glen Cassidy, 49, kill her former partner, 32-year-old Michael Caposiena.

Both men died in an altercation.

Edmunds is currently scheduled to stand trial in August, but her lawyer Richard Edney said she should be bailed because the case would not go ahead on that day.

"We don't know that," Justice Coghlan said.

He said he believed Victoria's County Court had "quite prematurely" said criminal trials would not happen at all this year.

The judge said there were ways in which juries could be used "while still practising social distancing".

Distancing might not be required in August if other measures are put in place, he added.

But when prosecutor Neil Hutton said it was speculation to assume the case wouldn't go ahead in August, he tempered his view saying it was difficult.

"If you were a betting man you know what you - what we all - have to put our bet on," he said, implying it was more likely it wouldn't go ahead.

There were also questions about how the court would manage the selection of jurors who don't want to attend court because of the virus, and for witnesses in the case.

Mr Edney said Edmunds should be released on other grounds including that the case was weak and her mental health was deteriorating.

Mr Hutton opposed bail, saying he considered the case to be "strong and compelling".

He said there were concerns for the safety of witnesses and that interstate travel was also not permitted. Edmunds intends for live with her father and children in Canberra if released.

But the judge noted she would be returning to her place of residence and he didn't believe she was otherwise a flight risk.

"Where's she going to go? Ordinary people can't get flights. Major drug dealers can but ordinary people can't," he said.

She could be released with an ankle monitoring bracelet, her lawyer suggested.

A decision on her release will be made next week.
