Detective Sergeant Andrew Raven, of the Warrnambool police crime investigation unit, said there had been about 10 offences committed in Warrnambool during the past week relating to thefts from vehicles.

"This is something we have been harping on about for years," he said.

"It's very frustrating that these opportunistic thefts are continuing to be allowed to be committed.

"Every week we see theft from vehicles. These are vehicles are left unlocked in driveways and on nature strips outside homes."

Detective Sergeant Raven said many people were working at home during the current coronavirus pandemic but that did not mean that vehicles should be left unlocked.

"People are leaving their vehicles unlocked with valuables inside," he said.

"It's an open invitation for thieves to commit these crimes. We've seen cameras, guitars, personal papers, bank cards, mobile phones, iPad and wallets stolen recently.

"The advice is clear - lock your vehicle and put valuables out of sight.

"It's far too easy for people to walk past, see a car is open, that there are valuables inside, lift the handle and take what's available."
