Hamilton police Sergeant Mark Phillips said emergency services were called to reports of a serious assault at an address in Hamilton's Lewis Street at 5.20pm last Thursday.
A 69-year-old man was found unconscious and the accused male had fled the scene.
Sergeant Phillips said the offender allegedly "hit the victim in the head with some sort of homemade weapon".
"The attack was unprovoked," he told The Standard.
The victim was taken to Hamilton Base Hospital with serious head injuries.
He has since been released.
The pair were known to each other.
Sergeant Phillips said a 25-year-old Hamilton man was arrested at a nearby address late on Thursday.
The man was conveyed to Warrnambool police station, interviewed and charged with serious assault-related offences, including attempted murder and intentionally causing serious injury.
The man appeared briefly in Warrnambool Magistrates' Court on Tuesday for a filing hearing.
He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until August 21. He will appear in court on that day for a committal mention.
The charges will likely be heard in the County Court.
Sergeant Phillips urged anyone with information to contact police.
"We know a car went past around the same time the assault took place so we ask if anyone witnessed the male fleeing the scene towards Coleraine Road with a backpack and a weapon, or if anyone witnessed any argument taking place near the address to please contact Hamilton Police station or Crime Stoppers," he said.
