North Warrnambool Eagles teenager Jett Bermingham played 10 Hampden league matches for the Bushfield-based club in 2019, including the grand final.
Bermingham then hit pre-season with the Rebels running, earning selection on the 50-player squad last week after missing out 12 months earlier.
The creative wingman, who prides himself on his kicking and running patterns, said Eagles coach Adam Dowie, who joined the club last year, had been a positive influence.
"He is so good. He knows so much about the game and he's helped me with my footy," Bermingham said.
"I wouldn't have been able to get to where I am without him. I try and work on what he's taught me and try and put it into Rebels, (such as) where you stand around contests, what's the best place to get the footy.
"He's definitely helped me playing on a wing at North, just where to run to and where to start and stop stoppages."
Bermingham made his senior debut for the Eagles in round one, 2019, against Portland.
He then spent a stint in the under 18s before earning a recall in July and holding his place as North Warrnambool Eagles charged into the grand final against Koroit.
"Billie Smedts, who used to play AFL, gave me my jumper (before my first game) so that was pretty unreal and it was a bit nerve-racking," Bermingham said.
"It was round one and a draw too. I didn't know how to feel about it.
"I played seniors for the last 10 games or so. It was good to play under 18s with all my mates and then get into the more serious stuff in the seniors."
Bermingham, a year 12 student at Emmanuel College who plans to take a gap year and travel to America to soak up its sporting scene, pays close attention to a number one draft pick with Hampden league connections.
The Carlton supporter said he enjoyed watching midfielder Sam Walsh, who has ties to Cobden, light it up for the Blues.
"It is good to watch Sam Walsh. He has elite endurance and kicking and he gets a lot of it," he said.
"I try to do some stuff he does and hopefully improve."
Bermingham is one of two North Warrnambool footballers on GWV Rebels' 2020 list.
The top-age prospect said bottom-age talent Ben Kellett had potential.
"He's got good skills for a big man. He's about 195 centimetres and he'll definitely be good in the future," Bermingham said.
"I played with him when we won the under 16s flag and he was definitely one of the reasons why we won.
"He played ruck when I played with him but he can definitely play forward as well. He's got good hands."
North Warrnambool Eagles - the home club for Gold Coast forward Josh Corbett - went without a NAB League player last season.
Bermingham said it was good for the club to have representation in 2020.
"This year we have two which has definitely helped, even for younger juniors to look up to," he said.
