Just a week after claiming his maiden criterium victory at the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic, the teenager took third in the under 18 50-kilometre race at the Otway Odyssey on Saturday.
The 17-year-old surprised himself with his time of 2:23:25 hours in one of the nation's most-respected mountain bike events.
"It was pretty outstanding, I didn't think I was going to do that well," he said.
"I paced myself all the way through."
Morton was glad he paced himself as he noticed other riders worked too hard on the uphill parts of the race.

The Warrnambool College year 11 student said he enjoyed the 50km distance because of its length and pace.
The South West Academy of Sport athlete is preparing for the 50km course of the Brackenbury Challenge in Creswick to be held in May.
