CFA and police were called to the grass fire on Rippon Road near Hamilton Lake around 2pm.
Ten CFA members quickly brought the fire under control with about 40 square metres of ground burnt.
Hamilton sergeant Paul Stanhope said the cause of the fire was still under investigation, adding it was definitely not started by a natural cause.
"We are calling for witness to come forward who might have seen people acting suspiciously in this area," Sergeant Stanhope said.
"We are particularly looking for anyone who might have seen two male youths in the vicinity of the fire."
Sergeant Stanhope said police had already spoken to two people seen running away from the incident seen, but needed more information to properly piece all of the events together.
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact the Hamilton police station or call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
