Staff listened while community members aired concerns around safety, road width and wildlife on Friday night.

Allansford residents Jill and Mick Mahony were on-site with their petition 'Build Roads Not Barriers'.

"It's ridiculous, it doesn't do anything about addressing traffic volumes, if wildlife end up on the road you can't steer around them and if there's a fire you can't turn around until there's a property entrance or an intersection," Mr Mahony said.

"Duplicating highways save lives, two lanes in each directions save lives.

"This is yours and my registration money and we're totally disgusted by the way VicRoads and TAC are spending it."

The pair have collected hundreds of signatures from across the region.

A Bushfield resident, who asked to remain anonymous, signed the petition against the wire rope barriers.

"The system should listen to the majority of people out there rather than make decisions in-house," he said.

"The roads are very bad for starters, if they turn around and came back in five years time when we had ripper roads, good wide roads, then we could talk about wire rope barriers.

"At the moment they're trying to put wire ropes down a goat track.

"If I took my tractor down the road it would probably cause an accident because the road is not wide enough for a truck to get past."

The petition will be tabled to parliament in the coming weeks.
