Sergeant Greg Cressall, of Warrnambool police, said a motorcylist travelling along the Hopkins Highway in Bushfield was hit by a vehicle about 2.40am on Sunday morning.
"A vehicle coming from Bridge Road failed to give way and collided with the motorbike which was travelling north on Hopkins Highway," Sergeant Cressall said.
"The male driver got out of his car but when other people showed up he got back in his car and drove off.
"He has failed to render any assistance to the motorbike rider."
Sergeant Cressall said it was a serious crime to leave the scene of an accident.
"You have to take responsibility for your actions," he said.
Sergeant Cressall said the motorcyclist, a 21-year-old man, was taken to South West Healthcare's Warrnambool Base Hospital with a suspected broken arm.
He said witnesses had provided police with information about the vehicle, including what they believed to be the registration number of the car involved in the hit and run.
"It's a serious incident," Sergeant Cressall said.
He said the man would be facing a number of charges when he was tracked down by police.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Warrnambool police on 5560 1333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
