SOUTH-WEST communities are warned to seek alternate travel routes ahead of the closure of major highway exits for road works next week.

Melbourne-bound exits from the Geelong Ring Road to the Hamilton Highway and Midland Highway will close from Monday 13 to Wednesday 15 January for resurfacing works, the Department of Transport has warned.
Works will be conducted daily from 9am to 2.30pm, weather permitting.
The Hamilton Highway exit will close on Monday 13 January, with traffic diverted via the Midland Highway ramps.
The Midland Highway exit will close on Tuesday 14 January, with traffic diverted via Anakie Road ramps.
Work will continue on Wednesday 15 January with alternating lane closures. Detours will be signed, with traffic controllers on-site to help direct traffic.
Acting Roads Minister Jacinta Allan urged motorists to take extra care on the roads this holiday season following the latest road trauma data which revealed the majority of the 146 deaths on regional Victorian roads last year were people driving in their local area.
"Every death on our roads is an unacceptable and preventable tragedy and regional Victorians remain over-represented in lives lost," she said.
