Warrnambool police Sergeant Danny Wright said the 24-year-old Ararat man was stuck for 45 minutes on the roof of Frost Bite Stone Cold Ice Creamery in Warrnambool's Kepler Street.
"Police suspected the man was involved in an earlier incident with an unregistered vehicle and false plates," he said.
"When they went to speak to the man he took off running and climbed up onto the building. He was stuck up there for 45 minutes.
"We had to get the fire brigade to climb onto the roof and escort him down a balcony at the rear of the building."
Sergeant Wright said the incident happened about 12.30am.
"It is very reckless behaviour," he said.
"The man now faces charges relating to trespassing and being drunk in a public place."
