Finance news website Accounts Daily awarded Jordan Dillon, a manager at Montgomery Carey and Associates, with an under-30 award for Tax and Compliance in Sydney last week.
Known for his football achievements as skipper of the North Warrnambool Eagles, the 29-year-old said the award was the "biggest" of his working career.
"It's nice to be noticed I have been doing the right thing," he said.
"I am big on being honest with the clients about what the process is and using the technology to assist with that process."
The Warrnambool-based firm only formed about two years ago and managing principal Richard Montgomery said Mr Dillon had helped manage a growing and changing business.
"There is always pressure points in a growing organisation, and he's done an excellent job managing that," Mr Montgomery said.
He credited Mr Dillon with use of cloud-based technology to help manage clients' accounts in real time, a major industry shift in the past five years.
"That technology is available to everyone within the industry, it's how you utilise it and deliver it to the client is what's of value," Mr Montgomery said.
The awarded recongised Mr Dillon ahead of young accountants nationally, and Mr Dillon said being part of a small firm was an advantage.
"Country people probably prefer that than the big-name firms you get in the city, I think it's more personable," Mr Dillon said.
