Now, it is back to its former glory after more than $450,000 has been invested to refurbish it.
Heather Reardon, the granddaughter of Jack Reardon who devoted much of his life to bringing cinema experiences to country towns, was delighted the works were completed.
"It means everything," she said.
"Not so long ago we thought it might be sold or decimated which was devastating to think about after knowing what my grandfather went through.
"I think it's amazing to see it has survived and is valued."
The Reardon Theatre plays a pivotal role in hosting community fundraisers throughout the year and is a main host of Port Fairy festival events.
The refurbishments were completed from State Government, Moyne Shire, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Film Society and Spring Music Festival contributions and include new seating, a heating and cooling system, automatic entrance doors, power upgrades, acoustic panels, unisex all-abilities bathroom and a fresh coat of paint.
Kevin Spencer was one of the men who originally worked on the construction of the Reardon Theatre in the early 1950s.
He remembers as a 15-year-old mixing the cement on the footpath.
"I worked on the Reardon Theatre for a short period of time before I went off to my National Service," he said.
"It's a good solid building and we did a good job."
Port Fairy Film Society president David Digby said this year had been very successful.
"The society has screened 140 movies mostly for community groups and over $120,000 of funds have gone back into the community," he said.
"Over 9000 have enjoyed the building and this summer we will screen 22 movies made possible by 30 volunteers ageing from 13 to late 80s.
"I love this place and I'm very proud to be associated with it such as I am."
The Reardon Theatre refurbishments were officially opened by Moyne Shire Mayor Daniel Meade, Mrs Reardon and Mr Digby.
