Police Senior Constable Brett Thornton said the assault happened about 7.30pm on Sunday as the 27-year-old victim was approaching his King Street home.
"He was walking home along King Street and has woken up on the ground after being struck to the head several times," he said.
"His injuries are consistent with being assaulted. The victim has suffered facial fractures to his left eye socket and cheek bone and significant damage to his left eye and left ear."
Police took the victim to the Warrnambool Base Hospital where he was assessed and treated.
Senior Constable Thornton said the assault happened in broad daylight and called for any witnesses to contact police.
"No one has been charged but we do have a person of interest. Investigations are continuing," he said.
"At this stage we need information from the public. The victim doesn't remember anything, just that all of a sudden he was on the ground with significant injuries."
Senior Constable Thornton can be contacted at the Koroit police station on 5565 8202 or information can be passed on to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police will also be conducting a door knock of the King Street area today seeking witnesses and information.
