TWO occupants of a car escaped injury early on Sunday morning after their vehicle became engulfed in flame.
Passers-by waved down the driver of the Suzuki hatchback near the intersection of Warrnambool's Whites Road and Garden Street, before firefighters attended at 12.45am.
Warrnambool's Country Fire Authority station officer Brent Freeman said the car was written-off, likely due to a mechanical fault in the car's engine bay.
He said the two Warrnambool males in the car were unharmed.
"They were surprised that it happened. They were obviously upset," Mr Freeman said.
"By the time we got there the whole engine bay was fully alight and starting to spread into the front compartment."
Mr Freeman said in his eight years with the brigade he hadn't seen a mechanical fault destroy a car.
"There will be an investigation to determine the cause and there was nothing suspicious that we saw," he said.
"It's pretty rare."
